Review of the Xiaomi Redmi Watch 3 Active

21-08-2024

After a month and a half of using the Xiaomi Redmi Watch 3 Active constantly, every day, and utilizing all its features, it's time to review the 3 Active.

Low Price and Good Price-Quality Ratio

You can find the 3 Active for between €35 and €50 brand new in Portugal at major tech stores. The quality of the 3 Active is good considering its price, making it a solid choice in its price range. Even though it was released on August 1, 2023, over a year later, it still offers a good price-quality ratio.

Over 100 Sports Modes and Water Resistance

The 3 Active offers over 100 sports modes and 5 ATM water resistance, which means up to 50 meters of depth. However, be aware that it doesn't support any water sports or swimming. There's a high chance you'll find your workout on the 3 Active, even if it's in the gym, as it includes modes for abs, legs, and all types of gym training.

The Watch 3 Active comes with BPM (heart rate) sensors that also measure blood oxygen levels, a pedometer, and a stress monitor.
The battery of the 3 Active typically lasts around 8 days, according to my usage, which is moderate to heavy. However, according to Xiaomi, with light usage, the 3 Active can last up to 12 days, but our estimates for light usage are only 8 to 10 days.

Battery and Charging

The battery of the 3 Active typically lasts around 8 days, according to my usage, which is moderate to heavy. However, according to Xiaomi, with light usage, the 3 Active can last up to 12 days, but our estimates for light usage are only 8 to 10 days.
We measured the time it takes for the 3 Active to charge, and it's almost always 1 hour and 30 minutes with a 12W adapter, although we are unsure how the adapter's capacity (which is not included in the box) affects the charging time. Charging is done via a magnetic USB-A charger that connects to the back of the watch.

Watch Exterior

The exterior of the watch is good and has a premium appearance, as well as being comfortable to wear. There is no visible brand identification since the only Xiaomi logo is located near the sensors. The straps are only available in gray and black, so if you want a different color, you will need to purchase additional straps separately. You might find it a bit challenging to install new straps, but with some help, it's not difficult. The watch straps do not connect like a traditional watch, but this makes the watch more secure on your wrist, preventing thieves from easily grabbing and running away with it.

1.83-inch Display

The 1.83-inch LCD display offers very good image quality for an LCD, and it's very bright at maximum settings. You can see the screen even in bright sunlight, as long as it's not shining directly on the smartwatch itself.

Software and Smartphone App

The watch's software is very good—simple and intuitive, offering a lot of customization, and it's easy to navigate. The 3 Active's app is Mi Fitness, available for Android and iPhone, but our tests were only conducted on a Samsung Android, so we cannot guarantee the same performance on an iPhone or Apple devices. Mi Fitness provides even more detailed reports than the smartwatch itself and can also control the smartwatch remotely.

Sleep Reports

The 3 Active monitors your sleep if you wear the watch at night. The 3 Watch creates a graph showing the stages of sleep, heart rate, and blood oxygen levels throughout the night, as well as the duration of your sleep.

Overheating

This only happened to me once, but it's important to highlight. On a hot day when I was in the sun for some time, the smartwatch turned off due to "overheating," and it was indeed hot, but the day was also one of the hottest. After 45 minutes, I put the watch back on and turned it on while still in the sun, and it worked perfectly from then on. It's important to note that I use a screen protector, which may have affected its temperature.

Final Considerations

The Watch 3 Active is a solid choice if you want a budget-friendly smartwatch with a large display, priced up to €80. The Watch 3 Active is clearly an entry-level smartwatch, and if your goal is to get a mid-range or high-end smartwatch, you should opt for one priced above €100.

Final score: 85/100
